Dunkelpunkt - Morgenlandfahrt

During the last years, [dunkelbunt] has recorded the album MORGENLANDFAHRT, to be released in May 2007 on Viennese urban-world label chat chapeau. MORGENLANDFAHRT is a mix of Dub, Reggae, Bossa, Jazz, Electronics, Trip Hop and Break Beats woven with a Balkan twist. Numerous co-operations with both Viennese and international musicians from the Balkan and Klezmer scenes have enriched many of the tracks on the album. The unifying factor across the album is Balkan folk and after a contemplative sitar introduction (a knowing nod to the original source) the Amsterdam Klezmer Band breaks into the most joyous racket on ‘La Reverdere’ over Dunkelbunt’s heavy rhythms. The tempo and mood doesn’t give up until ‘Lautlos’, 10 tracks in. In the intervening songs, nearly every upbeat world-music style is thrown into the mix in some way - Mariarchi brass in ‘Ashphalt Tango’, ska in ‘Der Kicherer’, Balkan polka in ‘Black Eyed Sea’, Django Reinhardt jazz in ‘The Stojka Empire’, along with lashes of upbeat dub and nu-school breaks - yet at all times remaining cohesive and never straying into the kitsch. The album then winds down with a handful of more mellow tracks, folk-dub-torch songs and the like, rounding out in a restful mood.Every track on Morgenlandfahrt fuses numerous disparate traditional and contemporary stylings in a playful, inventive manner. The scope of sound sources is mind boggling - a didgeridoo even pops up on ‘Wellenreiter’, later dissolving into processed Tibetan chanting. It’s a kind of joining the global dots which continually surprises and impresses. This is joyful, creative, celebratory music of the highest calibre.

Bombay Dub Orchestra - Bombay Dub Orchestra

The Bombay Dub Orchestra delivers on the promise of its name. Here, London studio insiders Andrew T. MacKay and Garry Hughes have devised a dream-like project where Lee Scratch Perry seemingly spent his time in India doing Bollywood film soundtracks instead of psychedelic Jamaican dub jams. With a world of experience between the two primaries (Bjork, ABC, Sly & Robbie, Vast), the duo's skillful integration of these seemingly divergent sources is seamless. A full orchestra, live soloist, and a rich production aesthetic are tastefully complemented by sexy trip-hop programming that recalls Zero 7 and other top-flight groups. The two-disc set includes a 12-song disc and an eight-song set of remixes on a second disc. The remixes are longer with slightly different assemblages of pieces, but aren't much weirder, just different. Highlights among the often pun-filled titles include the cinematic "Dust" and "The Berber Of Seville" as well as the atmospheric "Rare Earth: The Forest Of Thieves Mix." -- Tad Hendrickson

Dday One - Heavy Migration

DDay One was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He has a double major in hip-hop as a turntablist and samplist. He also has a minor in graffiti art (as do most b-boys), noticeable by his signature. His obsession with manipulating vinyl records started in the early 1990..s, when at the age of 11 he began exploring the depths of Los Angeles's thrift shops and record stores.

Without a sampler at the time his first compositions were made by engaging in sessions of "dropping the needle" (placing the needle repeatedly in the same spot of a record to emulate the repetition of a break in a song) and repeatedly looping the desired sample segments on a tape deck. After using this method of creating beats and amassing stacks of records from years of beat mining, he furthered his manipulation of vinyl and love of music by utilizing the sequencing capabilities of a sampler.

Erik Sumo - My Rocky Mountain

Review:
The debut long-player from Budapest beat juggler Ambrus Tovishazi. Life as a ' Crate Soul Brother' has seen Erik Sumo immersed in rare Eastern European jazz, library soundtracks, twisted funk, and cutting edge Baltic break beats for some time. It may come as some surprise then, that on his debut LP the Hungarian singer/songwriter has mixed up a heady concoction of Western inspired, acid tinged, future blues music that'll challenge the listener as much as it's guaranteed to entertain them. 'My Rocky Mountain': a genre defying and surreal collection of songs that are sure to turn so-called 'dance' music on its head. An album inspired as much by Ennio Morricone and Clint Eastwood as it is by post-punk, Portishead and the cosmic sounds of seminal outfits like the RTB Big Band. Tovishazi, with a little help from vocalists Julie Fabian and Erzsi Kiss, is due to confound, confuse and amaze with his debut LP. He reaches the summit of his ‘Rocky Mountain’ as has a hell of a lot of fun along the way…now ‘get on your horse, and drink your milk’…. - Soul Seduction

Ralph Myerz & Jack Herren Band - A Special Album

Norway’s Ralph Myerz follows up the buzz-heavy A Special EP with this full-length effort, a rather weightless yet pleasing mix of good-natured cheese and sunny downtempo. With a light trip-hop touch, Myerz draws from artists like Bent and Gus Gus while incorporating elements of dub and astral jazz. Some songs have a Martin Denny-esque exotica quality about them, like "Casino," but the record plays it straight most of the time, infusing mellow electronics with dreamy reverb and throbbing bass tones. The silky tones of the title track, for instance, create a sexed-up ambience ideal for late nights and candlelight. Myerz’s experiments do go occasionally awry; the retro-funk of "Funky Bizness" goes nowhere. Nevertheless, A Special Album promises great things in the future with its airy, off-kilter sensibilities. - Matthew Cooke
